Local officials said one person was killed and seven others injured on Tuesday night at a basketball court in Tampa, Florida.
Investigators believe that a group of people traveling in a vehicle with tinted windows fired several shots, removing those gathered near the basketball court.
Affiliate ABC reported that the shooting was not random and targeted the group.
The sheriff’s officer said a 36-year-old man died of his injuries after arriving at hospital, while two other victims were serious and five were listed as stable. Affiliate ABC said all of the victims were between 17 and 36 years old.
Hillsborough County detectives were trying to determine the motive for the attack.
Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement: “We lost a life tonight due to the condescending violence”.
“We aim to restore peace to this community and we will continue to crack down on those who do harm,” he said.
